Why did you become a personal trainer?
After dancing Jazz and Modern from age 3 until age 22...I decided to see what all the fuss was about in the aerobics room at the gym (yep, I am 50 years old!!!) I got hooked on step-aerobics, until they changed the music and made it too corporate. At that point, I looked around and was intrigued by the weight room. I went right in...by myself...and tried the machines and watched the trainers and learned how to weight train. I was HOOKED. I LOVED feeling strong and powerful as a woman...and I loved how I looked with lean muscle tone. After doing this for years for my own body and mind...and after years of being asked "why aren't you a personal trainer?" I thought...Hmmm...good question!!! And...that is when I decided to make my own passion of working out and weight training and eating healthy and being fit...my career. And...that was the best decision I have ever made. 20 years (and many more to come) of loving my job...that is a blessing!!!
What is one of the proudest moments you've had with a client?
In my 20 years of training clients and doing nutrition counseling, I have had so many moments that have made me so proud of my clients. Here is the one thing that NEVER changes and that ALWAYS gives me goose bumps and makes me smile and warms my heart...and this happens everyday...with every client...after each hour session: The client comes in from work/life stressed, angry, sad, upset, frustrated, exhausted and does not want to be there...and after our hour together...breathing, moving, laughing, lifting, sweating...I ask if they feel better...and they turn to me and say..."I am soooooo glad I came here today, I feel soooooo much better than when I came in." That is music to my ears.
What do you specialize in?
Having my own Nutrition business has been amazing in order to guide my clients to healthy eating without dieting. I started Food Print for Life because I was doing everything wrong and did not get the results I wanted for my own body. Once I learned how to eat correctly...and how I could EAT and not starve myself to be fit and healthy...I had to share this with the world!!! It has been so much fun to watch my clients learn easy, yummy, convienent ways to eat healthy food and lose body-fat and increase lean muscle and feel great about their success. Taking clients on Grocery shopping tours has been a highlight of these nutrition sessions. As for training, I want to make sure that each client gets their individual goals/needs met based on who they are as a person and what their own body is capable of doing. Form, technique and pace are very important in order to prevent injury, so I make sure that each client goes at their own pace and learns the proper form and technique of all the exercises and stretches.
Who do you look up to?
Anyone who is willing to be honest with themselves. Anyone who is willing to learn from their mistakes, to want to grow and learn about themselves, to move forward emotionally and physically and anyone who is willing to ask for help when they need it and know they cannot do it on their own.
Where are you from?
I was born in Columbus, Ohio...and grew up in Evanston, IL.
What is something someone would be surprised to learn about you?
I eat the same thing for dinner every night. (although, I do not think that is a surprise...my friends and clients know me very well!!!!) I would NEVER ask you to do the same...FYI. :)
