Original Strength's Press RESET Workshop: What the Heck Is It and Why Does Izzy Keep Talking About It?

TruFit Personal Training Studios is hosting an Original Strength Press RESET workshop and I keep talking about how excited I am. But what the heck is Original Strength, anyway? Why is the workshop called “Press RESET” and are we supposed to yell “RESET” because it’s in all caps? Why should you care and why should you go? I’ll address all of this in bulletpoints.

  • Original Strength is a company founded on the belief that we humans were made to move well and freely, even as we age. It scoffs at the idea that, “Well, I’ve got more aches and pains and it’s because I’m older and is my lot in life.” We humans were NOT made to sit at desks and in cars all day; it’s no wonder we feel so crappy! And while our 70-year-old selves won’t feel like our 20-year-old selves did, we should still not blindly accept feeling bad in our bodies. OS’s mission is to teach people how rediscover their innate movement again, one person at a time to change the world!
  • I think every single client I’ve met with has said they want the following: To be more flexible; to have better core strength; to improve their balance; to be in less pain when they climb stairs/get out of bed/swim/fill in the blank. The OS resets, when worked individually and together, tackle all of those issues. By training the individual how to incorporate resets into their daily life, the client can regain: The ability to move joints around with more fluidity and less restriction; deep, reflexive core strength; stability in movements that might have felt off kilter and off balance; and a lot less discomfort and pain because now their body feels less threatened by the fear of something hurting them even more.
  • OS’s method includes 5 groupings of movement patterns which they call “resets”. The groupings are derived from developmental patterns that we have all gone through in one way or another from the time we were born. They are: Breathing; head control; rolling; rocking; crawling (gait patterning). By going back to these developmental movements we learned as babies, we can press the “reset” button in our adult bodies to remind them HOW to move again. Here is a great story about how a friend of mine regained his ability to squat during an OS Press RESET workshop.

So let’s say your body (or a client’s body) isn’t cooperating, isn’t moving the way it should, is in daily discomfort or pain. You want to reboot that body, press the reset button. Here is how a Press RESET workshop works:

  • Each participant gets to pick a movement or exercise to use as a baseline (like a squat or pushup or toe touch). You’ll do that movement, check in with yourself about how it feels. Then, the instructor will teach the room different resets within each of those groupings I mentioned before.
  • We’ll learn the resets by doing them ourselves. Then after each one, we’ll get to re-test those baseline exercises we picked to see if the reset helped them get better or worse or stay about the same. We do this with breathing resets, head control resets, rolling resets, etc.

What Sets OS Apart From Other Systems?

As a fitness professional, I’ve gone through a bunch of certifications that are aimed at teaching people how to get stronger, how to move better, how to get other people stronger and moving better. But, and without badmouthing any of those other systems, here is what I appreciate about OS:
  • OS itself isn’t really a SYSTEM where x + x = y. It’s more like a method that understands that every body is different and may react differently than their neighbor’s body. This means: If you can’t do one reset, it’s OK! There are so many others to try! You are not broken!
  • It’s so simple! While a lot of other similar systems have the same final goal (to help people get out of pain), a lot of the systems get overly complicated which can lead to the patient/client or even the practitioner feeling stupid. And when we feel stupid, we’re less likely to keep going with a program.
  • I’ll say this again because it deserves to be said: You are not a broken person who needs to be fixed! Deep inside of your core processor (your central nervous system and your brain) is the recollection of how how your body can move free of (or with a lot less) pain. By learning and using the resets, you can help your body recover from what’s been keeping it from working at its potential.
  • The OS Press RESET workshop is immediately applicable when you leave.

OS believes that by helping one person move better, you help communities of people around them. If you’ve ever been in chronic pain, think about how that has affected you and the way you treat the world around you. If you can help ONE person (or yourself) move through their world more easily, how might that affect their partner? Their children? Their friends? Their parents?
So come to the workshop, see how you feel and decide whether or not you want to yell RESET because it’s in all caps ;) You can sign up here!
